Heat Land is a multimedia installation artwork exposing the global warming problem. The present global warming has caused many problems including rising temperature, droughts, the rise of sea level, climate change and so on. In the past 40 years, the annual temperature has risen 2 Celsius degrees. The artist hopes the audiences can realize how serious the global warming problem is and what kind of difficulty the humans in the future will face after seeing this artwork.
In this artwork, the artist exaggerated the rising temperature effect the earth is facing now. She created a fictional world named Heat land. In this land, the sky is burning red, the land is orange, the only plant is the root wreck, while the products of carbon emission become alive, and the factory is running for destroy the ice.
The artist focuses on developing interaction of multiple senses for this project. Therefore, this artwork is composed with several parts.
Media: VR, Unity, Recycled Boxes, Bottles, Papers and Tubes, Arduino, Multiple sensors and motors, Acrylic Painting,
Mixed Chemicals, Colored Liquids.

Part one: Seeing
VR interaction: this part is done by Unity and the audiences are invited to wear the glasses to explore the virtual creation of this artwork.
Carbon Emission Robot: This part reflects the artist’s idea that once if the products of carbon emission are exceeded, they might become alive while humans are dying. The two robots are made of recycled boxes, bottles and tubes. After being painted and decorated by mixed materials. The artists installed multiple motors in order to generate the mechanical motions.

Part Two: Feeling
Acrylic Painting Coat: The artist used acrylic to paint the whole coat. She used various colors to mimic and expose the sun blotches effect. Since the whole coat is covered by the acrylic painting, it becomes air proof and very hot to wear.

Part Three: Listening
Ambient Sound: The artist created a piece of ambient music for this project to enhance the immersive experience.
Part Four: Smelling
Mixed Chemical Smell: The artist mixed several chemical liquids including several kinds of oils, spices and scents in order to make the audiences experience heat by smelling.

Part Five: Motion Interaction
Heat land Factory scene with interactive painting: This part is installed with multiple recycled boxes, bottles, papers and tubes. In the center of this scene, there is an acrylic painting (70cm x 100cm). This is an interactive painting. When the audience getting closer to the painting. The sensor driven by Arduino will detect the motion and send data to the motors. And the colored liquid from the glass tank will be sprayed on to the paintings.

The Creating Process Photos

Although the artist wants to reflect the outcome of the global warming and try to have the audiences enter in an uncomfortable “world” of heat. Originally, the artist plans to utilize some heater, fan which can generate heat wind, sand and so on. However, the artist thinks in that way, this artwork itself is against the environment protection rule. Therefore, the artist decided to use recycled goods and remake them.
