Mind Dissection 2118

Mind Dissection 2118 is an interactive installation artwork about a possible imagination of the futuristic society. The rapid development of the social media, virtual technology and cyber world might lead to a society which all the humans falling into an eternal dream. And one’s mind is no longer controlled by its physical body, and it can be dissected into multiple mind particles which can move and communicate independently. The interaction is done through camera, Arduino and tough designer. The display of the space also questions what is the reality and what is the dream.

During the research process, this imagination reminds me of various books and theories. 1.Andy Warhol’s prediction of “in this world, everyone will be famous within 15 minutes in the future” is about to become a reality. 2.In Descartes’ Dream Argument, Descartes questioned that if the dream becomes clearer, whether we can conclude that it is not the reality.If the online world takes precedence over the real world, should people define what happens in the real world as reality? 3.In Oscar Wilde’s “the Portrait of Dorian Gray”, the main character, Dorian Gray, indulges in his own beauty in the painting and finally turns his soul into evil (Wilde, 2010). This will correspond with how people who can gain the things they desire online might become dependent to the cyber world irresistibly. 4.In Billy Milligan’s documentary “The Minds of Billy Milligan”, such a scene is described, when the first appeared original personality is sleeping, all other personalities take turns occupying the “spot” (Keyes, 1995).If we predict the future based on the development of the cyber world, the needs of physical is gradually becoming less and less than before.
